American Express has unveiled a new blockchain-powered travel ecosystem designed to enhance and personalise journeys for its premium Card Members. At the heart of this initiative lies the introduction of Ethereum-based “Travel Stamps” – NFTs that commemorate experiences rather than function as tradeable assets. The announcement comes as part of the launch of Amex’s revamped travel app, which consolidates booking, planning and lounge services into a single platform.
A Blockchain Twist on Travel Memories
The new Amex Passport™ feature allows travellers to collect digital “stamps” whenever they use their American Express cards abroad. These stamps are technically NFTs (ERC-721 tokens) minted on Coinbase’s Base network, but the company has intentionally avoided branding them as such.

Colin Marlowe, Vice President of Emerging Partnerships at Amex Digital Labs, clarified the approach:
“It’s a valueless ERC-721, so technically an NFT, but we just didn’t brand it as such. We wanted to speak to it in a way that was natural for the travel experience itself. These tokens act as identifiers and representations of history, rather than speculative assets.”
The stamps cannot be traded or redeemed like loyalty points, but Amex sees potential for future partnerships and integrations. For now, they are designed purely as digital keepsakes to enrich the sense of nostalgia and celebration associated with travel.
Fireblocks Secures the Digital Wallet
Amex has partnered with Fireblocks, which provides Wallet-as-a-Service technology for the new passport product. This ensures the security of these blockchain tokens while simplifying user experience, allowing Card Members to access their commemorative collectibles seamlessly through the Amex Travel App.

The use of Fireblocks underlines American Express’ commitment to enterprise-grade security and compliance. For travellers, it means the digital stamps remain protected while still verifiable on the public blockchain.
One App for the Entire Journey
Alongside the blockchain stamps, American Express has introduced the Amex Travel App™, which aims to streamline every stage of the journey from inspiration and planning to booking and airport lounge access.
The app integrates:
- Destination guides and curated itineraries
- Flight, hotel and rental booking tools
- Amex Passport for digital travel memories
- Centurion Lounge digital waitlists with real-time updates
According to Amex research, 81% of surveyed travellers prefer a single app that connects vacation planning with actual travel arrangements. The new ecosystem is designed to answer this demand, offering efficiency while maintaining Amex’s hallmark of premium service.
Nostalgia Meets Technology
The company’s decision to frame NFTs as “stamps” is more than clever branding. With physical passport stamps becoming increasingly rare in the modern era of biometric borders and e-visas, Amex has identified a gap for travellers seeking tangible reminders of their trips.
Luke Gebb, Executive Vice President at Amex Digital Labs, explained the motivation:
“Part of the magic of travel is reminiscing about past getaways and commemorative keepsakes are a powerful way for travellers to relive their favourite trips. As physical passport stamps continue to disappear, Amex Passport creates an opportunity for Card Members to celebrate their travels in a digital and enduring way.”

This aligns with survey results, which found 73% of travellers would like digital methods to record and relive their trips. The Travel Stamps therefore merge nostalgia with cutting-edge blockchain technology, creating a bridge between memory and innovation.
Centurion Lounge Upgrades
Another highlight of the new ecosystem is the enhanced Centurion Lounge experience. The app introduces a digital waitlist feature, providing real-time estimated wait times for entry. This allows members to better plan their airport routine, reducing stress and making the premium lounge experience even smoother.
For frequent travellers, this update could significantly improve how downtime at airports is managed, further differentiating American Express from its competitors in the travel rewards space.
Not Just About Revenue
American Express has emphasised that the initiative is not about immediate profit. Instead, it’s aimed at strengthening brand identity and enriching customer experiences. By deploying blockchain not as a speculative tool but as a storytelling medium, Amex sets itself apart in both the financial services and travel industries.
Marlowe summarised the ethos:
“We weren’t trying to sell these or generate any short-term revenue. The angle is to make a travel experience with Amex feel really rich, really different and set it apart.”
A Premium Journey, Reimagined
By combining blockchain technology, secure digital wallets and a streamlined travel app, American Express is delivering a vision of travel that blends nostalgia, efficiency and innovation. The Travel Stamps may not hold monetary value, but as unique digital markers of personal journeys, they could prove just as valuable to travellers in emotional and experiential terms.
With this launch, Amex is not simply offering another rewards programme – it is reimagining what it means to collect memories in the digital age, while reinforcing its position as a leader in premium travel services.
